The 2027 presidential race has taken another turn as Peoples Redemption Party, PRP, National Chairman Hakeem Baba-Ahmed declared that the party’s candidate, Donald Duke, is better than all other presidential contenders.
Baba-Ahmed made the declaration during an interview with Arise News on Wednesday while speaking about the PRP’s role in the emerging opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He said the party was confident in Duke’s credentials and considered itself fortunate to have the former Cross River State governor as its presidential candidate.
“Candidate for candidate, we think we have the best. We’re very fortunate to have him. So, candidate for candidate, Donald Duke is better than all the candidates out there,” he said.
Despite his strong endorsement of Duke’s credentials, Baba-Ahmed acknowledged that having a strong presidential candidate would not, by itself, guarantee electoral victory.
He said the reality had informed the PRP’s decision to remain actively involved in efforts to build a wider coalition of opposition parties capable of working together ahead of the election.
Baba-Ahmed explained that the PRP would not insist that Duke must automatically become the candidate of any coalition simply because the party considers him the strongest contender.
“We don’t want to prejudge or preempt anything by saying, ‘Because he’s the best, he has to be the candidate,’ by whatever means you come to do that,” he said.
Instead, he said the party wanted to build an alliance with political parties that shared its broad outlook and were willing to arrive at decisions through consensus and constitutional procedures.
He further described the 2027 election as an important moment for Nigeria, arguing that the country must make meaningful progress in the next four years and address divisions that could affect its development.
“Nigeria must, in the next four years, make a difference in the manner in which this country either develops or moves away from its fault lines, or just simply sinks into that. It really is that important,” Baba-Ahmed said.
His comments come amid ongoing opposition consultations ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with the PRP among the parties participating in discussions aimed at strengthening cooperation and broadening the emerging coalition.
