The Nigeria Democratic Congress has appointed its National Leader, Seriake Dickson, to head its National Campaign Council ahead of the 2027 general elections, while its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, will serve as co-chairman.
The appointments were announced on Sunday night, less than 24 hours before the party’s planned inauguration of the council in Abuja.
NDC National Chairman Cleopas Moses Zuwoghe will serve as vice chairman, while vice-presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso has been named co-vice chairman.
Ikenna Enekweizu, the party’s National Secretary, was appointed council secretary, while Mallam Ibrahim Abdulkarim will serve as Director-General.
Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation Babachir Lawal will chair the National Advisory Council. Other appointees include former Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege, former presidential candidate Pat Utomi and former National Secretary of the Congress for Progressive Change Buba Galadima.
The party’s activities for Monday, October 26, include its third National Executive Committee meeting, the commissioning of its new national secretariat in Jabi, Abuja, and the inauguration of the campaign council.
National Publicity Secretary Osa Director said the NEC meeting would hold at 10am at JD Event Centre in Maitama. The new secretariat is scheduled to be commissioned at 2pm, while the campaign council’s inauguration and presentation of certificates of return to party candidates will begin at 5pm.
The party said the council would coordinate a people-centred and issue-based campaign ahead of the 2027 elections. Certificates of return are also expected to be presented to candidates contesting presidential, governorship, National Assembly and state assembly seats.
The NDC also plans to present its statement of account at the NEC meeting. Director said economic hardship had affected the party’s finances and claimed that about 80 per cent of its candidates could not afford expression-of-interest forms, leading the party to provide the forms free of charge to affected aspirants.
