The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has pledged that he would not use the powers of the presidency to intimidate, harass or persecute political opponents if elected Nigeria’s president in the 2027 general election.

Obi said his administration would strengthen democratic institutions, encourage constructive engagement with opposition parties, and ensure that government operates strictly within the confines of the rule of law.

Speaking during an interview with DW, the former Anambra State governor said a healthy democracy thrives on the existence of a vibrant opposition, stressing that opposing voices should be seen as partners in nation-building rather than enemies of government.

According to him, his government would create an environment where opposition political parties can operate freely, express dissenting opinions, and contribute ideas that could help move the country forward.

Obi maintained that democracy flourishes when leaders respect constitutional rights and allow institutions to function independently without political interference.

He said his administration would engage opposition leaders, civil society organisations, traditional rulers, and other critical stakeholders in finding lasting solutions to Nigeria’s numerous challenges, particularly insecurity, unemployment, poverty and economic instability.

The former Labour Party presidential candidate stressed that addressing the country’s problems requires collective responsibility rather than political exclusion, adding that no single individual or political party possesses all the answers to Nigeria’s challenges.

Obi further assured Nigerians that he would never misuse the enormous powers attached to the office of the president to settle political scores or silence critics.

He insisted that law enforcement agencies and other government institutions under his administration would be allowed to discharge their constitutional responsibilities professionally, fairly and in accordance with the law, without being used as instruments of political persecution.

According to him, strengthening democratic institutions, promoting accountability, and ensuring that every arm of government functions effectively would remain among the major priorities of his administration if elected in 2027.

Obi noted that building strong institutions rather than empowering individuals is essential for sustainable democracy and good governance, adding that Nigeria’s progress depends on leaders who respect democratic principles, uphold the rule of law, and place national interest above partisan politics.

He expressed confidence that by promoting inclusiveness, dialogue and institutional independence, Nigeria can build a more stable democracy capable of addressing insecurity and other pressing national issues while fostering national unity and development.
