President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid has received a fresh commitment from APC governors, with Imo Governor Hope Uzodinma saying state governors will take responsibility for delivering victory for the President across the country.
Uzodinma, who chairs the Progressive Governors Forum, spoke after the President met with APC governors in Abuja following the 160th National Economic Council meeting.
Representing the governors, the Imo governor said they had agreed with Tinubu on the need to secure his re-election, assuring that APC governors remained firmly committed to the President’s second-term ambition.
He said governors were strategically positioned to drive the campaign because they understood the political situation and challenges within their individual states. According to him, each governor would determine what was necessary to build an effective campaign structure capable of producing victory for the party.
Uzodinma stressed that the 2027 election would require strong coordination between the states and the national leadership of the party. He said governors would work with the APC and other party leaders while taking the lead in campaign activities and mobilisation within their jurisdictions.
Nasarawa Governor Abdullahi Sule also maintained that governors would play the central role in the presidential campaign at the state level. He argued that elections are won through votes in the states, making the governors critical to the success of the party’s 2027 campaign.
Sule said the Presidential Campaign Council would collaborate with governors to determine the necessary strategies for securing victory, adding that the campaign structure would be expected to address the political realities of each state.
The meeting also provided an opportunity for Tinubu to brief the governors on the newly constituted Presidential Campaign Council. Uzodinma said the governors were in agreement with the composition of the council, which was unveiled on August 22.
Tinubu serves as chairman of the council, while Vice President Kashim Shettima is vice chairman. Former Zamfara Governor Abdulaziz Yari was appointed Director-General, while Uzodinma was named Secretary, with other officials assigned responsibilities covering mobilisation, administration, media, election planning and the six geopolitical zones.
However, the meeting was not focused entirely on the 2027 election, as governance issues reportedly dominated a significant part of the discussions. Uzodinma said the President and governors examined ways of easing the economic burden on Nigerians, including lowering transportation costs, improving food security and strengthening agriculture.
The governors also reviewed the effects of ongoing government reforms and considered areas where improvements were needed to ensure Nigerians feel greater benefits from the policies. Uzodinma said the governors were pleased with the discussions.
Sule, meanwhile, highlighted Tinubu’s emphasis on Nigeria’s gas sector, particularly the expansion of CNG utilisation. He said the President discussed the country’s gas potential extensively and had committed significant resources towards developing the sector.
According to Sule, Tinubu also urged the governors to prioritise unity within the APC and the country, alongside efforts to reduce poverty and ensure that government programmes benefit Nigerians across different sections of society.
The governors’ commitment comes as political activities for the 2027 general election gather momentum, following INEC’s commencement of the official campaign period on August 19, with the APC now moving towards a more coordinated state-by-state campaign for Tinubu’s re-election.
