Retired Major General Rabe Abubakar has died while being held by bandits, bringing a tragic end to efforts aimed at securing his release following his abduction in Katsina State.

The Katsina State Government confirmed the development on Saturday through a statement issued by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasir Muazu.

Authorities disclosed that the former military officer died from complications arising from diabetes and hypertension during his time in captivity.

The government noted that security agencies and state officials worked tirelessly to secure his freedom after his abduction but were unable to achieve a breakthrough before his death.

Officials described the incident as a devastating loss, stressing that the late general dedicated a significant part of his life to serving the country through the armed forces.

Reacting to the development, Governor Dikko Umaru Radda said the tragedy reflects the serious security challenges confronting communities and travellers in parts of the state.

He sympathised with the family of the deceased and assured residents that the government would intensify efforts to combat banditry and other criminal activities.

The governor further pledged continued cooperation with federal authorities and security agencies to ensure those responsible for the abduction are identified and prosecuted.

Abubakar and his wife were kidnapped on May 30 while travelling through Katsina State.

Reports before his death revealed that the kidnappers demanded the release of detained fighters and the return of livestock allegedly seized during military operations before they would consider freeing the victims.

The late Major General served as Director of Defence Information and remained a respected figure within military and security circles after retirement.
