President Bola Tinubu has advanced plans for the establishment of state police by submitting a Constitution Alteration Bill to the Senate for consideration.
The proposal seeks to amend the 1999 Constitution to legally empower states to set up and manage their own police forces alongside federal security agencies.
The initiative forms part of ongoing constitutional reforms aimed at decentralising security operations and improving responses to rising insecurity across the country.
Tinubu had earlier advocated for the creation of state police, stressing that states must play a more active role in protecting lives and property within their jurisdictions.
He has also consistently maintained a hard line against terrorism and banditry, promising stronger security operations and stricter enforcement against criminal groups.
The bill is expected to be considered by the Senate as lawmakers continue discussions on restructuring Nigeria’s policing system to enhance national security.
