Former Sports Minister Solomon Dalung has said he will accept President Bola Tinubu’s victory if Nigerians choose to re-elect him in the 2027 presidential election, saying he will not blame the opposition coalition for the outcome.
Dalung spoke during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, against the backdrop of fresh efforts by opposition parties to unite ahead of the 2027 election.
The former minister said a Tinubu victory would have to be accepted as the decision of Nigerians if the election is conducted democratically and the president wins the support of voters.
He said he would not accuse the opposition coalition of causing such an outcome because Nigerians, rather than political parties, ultimately decide who governs the country.
Dalung explained that if voters choose Tinubu again, it would show that the opposition had not been able to convince enough Nigerians to support its alternative.
“I will accept it as a verdict of Nigerians,” he said, adding that he would respect the decision if Tinubu emerges victorious.
The former minister also maintained that the opposition coalition represents the people and cannot determine the outcome of an election without the support of voters.
His comments come as opposition parties are working to build a stronger alliance that could challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress in 2027.
Recently, six opposition parties proposed a “government of national competence” that would operate for a single four-year transition term ahead of the 2027 general election.
The proposal was presented at a summit organised by G100 in Abuja and involved the African Democratic Congress, Allied Peoples Movement, Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peoples Democratic Party, Peoples Redemption Party and Social Democratic Party.
Former APC North-West Vice-Chairman Salihu Lukman presented the proposal, with competence, integrity, national inclusion and fair representation identified as key principles.
The opposition parties also proposed an enforceable transition charter and committees to coordinate their activities, pursue national reforms, strengthen opposition unity and work towards selecting a common presidential candidate for the 2027 election.
