Ahead of the 2027 general elections, NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi has called on Nigerians to vote in large numbers and remain vigilant in protecting their ballots throughout the electoral process.

Obi made the appeal following a series of engagements with supporters, party stakeholders and residents in Kogi, Benue and Enugu states.

During the engagements, the former Anambra governor said Nigerians continued to face challenges such as insecurity, unemployment, poverty, poor healthcare and inadequate educational facilities.

He began the latest phase of his consultations in Olamaboro Local Government Area of Kogi State, where he met with party members and stakeholders alongside the NDC’s Kogi East senatorial candidate, High Chief Peter Ameh.

Obi said the meetings provided an opportunity to hear directly from citizens about the difficulties confronting their communities and the expectations they have from government.

He urged his supporters to remain committed to the democratic process, stressing the importance of turning out for the election and ensuring that votes cast at polling units are protected until the final results are announced.

The NDC candidate said similar concerns were raised during his visits to Otukpa in Ogbadibo Local Government Area of Benue State and Obollo Afor in Enugu State.

According to him, residents across the communities want safer neighbourhoods, jobs for young people, functioning hospitals and schools, and greater opportunities to improve their livelihoods.

Obi maintained that such demands should not be considered excessive, arguing that they represent basic expectations from a government focused on improving citizens’ welfare.

His latest warning followed remarks he made at a town hall meeting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where he told supporters not to be intimidated when discussing the need to defend their votes.

After a supporter declared that Nigerians were ready to die to protect their mandate, Obi said he was also prepared to stand with them, while urging them not to feel intimidated.

He further expressed concern that efforts could be made to manipulate the electoral process but said Nigerians would be better prepared to protect their votes in the next election.

Obi, who finished third in the 2023 presidential election, is now contesting under the NDC and has Rabiu Kwankwaso as his running mate. Atiku Abubakar is the ADC presidential candidate, while President Bola Tinubu is seeking re-election.
