The Federal Government has declared May 27 and 28, 2026, as public holidays for Muslims to celebrate Eid el Kabir across the country as Authorities intensifies security operations across Nigeria after fresh intelligence warned of possible terrorist attacks during the Eid el Kabir celebrations.

Announcing the holidays, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo called on Nigerians to pray for peace, unity, and progress during the festive season.

At the same time, security agencies nationwide rolled out large scale operations following terror alerts linked to possible attacks by insurgent groups during the Sallah celebrations.

The military command overseeing operations in the North East said intelligence reports indicated that Boko Haram and ISWAP remnants could target crowded areas with improvised explosive devices and suicide attacks.

Operation Hadin Kai, however, assured residents that troops had already intensified patrols, surveillance, and intelligence operations in collaboration with local vigilantes and other security agencies.

Police commands in several states including Bauchi, Sokoto, and Kogi also announced increased security presence around Eid prayer grounds, highways, markets, and event centres.

In Abuja, Kano, Kwara, and Gombe, the NSCDC deployed thousands of officers and specialised tactical units to secure public places, while the FRSC activated special patrols to reduce road accidents and traffic violations during the holiday period.

Authorities urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and quickly report suspicious activities to security agencies throughout the celebrations.
