The legal battle involving former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has taken an international dimension following the decision of his supporters to engage a United States based advocacy firm to push concerns about his prosecution.
The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, however, insisted that its handling of the case remains strictly within the provisions of the law and free from political influence.
ICPC spokesman John Odey stated that the commission was simply complying with court orders and that El-Rufai’s detention was backed by a valid remand directive issued by the court.
He dismissed suggestions that the anti-graft agency was targeting the former governor for political reasons, stressing that the commission prosecutes alleged offenders based on evidence and legal provisions rather than political considerations.
Earlier, the El-Rufai Support Group Association announced the appointment of Vanguard Africa to engage policymakers, democratic institutions and relevant stakeholders in the United States over the former governor’s case.
The group argued that El-Rufai’s detention reflected deeper concerns about due process and the independence of democratic institutions in Nigeria.
According to the association, the matter has implications beyond one individual and could shape perceptions about the fairness of Nigeria’s political and judicial systems ahead of future elections.
El-Rufai is currently facing charges related to alleged abuse of office, fraud and financial misconduct, alongside separate allegations concerning the interception of communications linked to national security matters.
