The Federal Government has directed the Nigeria Immigration Service to immediately withdraw and deactivate Nigerian passports belonging to individuals who have formally renounced their citizenship. The directive was issued by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

The government explained that the order applies strictly to persons whose renunciation has been officially approved by the President, as required under Nigeria’s constitutional provisions. Authorities say the move is aimed at strengthening the country’s identity management system.

Citing Section 29(1) and (2) of the 1999 Constitution, the ministry noted that any Nigerian of legal age who voluntarily renounces citizenship ceases to be a citizen once the declaration is registered by the President.

Following this legal process, the ministry stated that such individuals can no longer retain or use Nigerian sovereign documents, including international passports issued by the country.

Officials added that the directive is part of broader reforms within the immigration and passport system, designed to prevent identity abuse, strengthen border control, and ensure only legitimate citizens have access to Nigerian travel documentation.

The government further explained that the decision closes existing gaps that previously allowed some former citizens to continue using Nigerian passports even after renouncing their nationality.

Tunji-Ojo reaffirmed that the administration remains committed to protecting the integrity of Nigeria’s citizenship framework and ensuring that national documents are properly regulated and secured.
