Inspector General of Police Olatunji Disu has raised fresh concerns over the widespread use of heavily tinted vehicles, describing them as a significant challenge to security agencies across Nigeria.

The police boss stated that if the decision rested entirely with him, he would prohibit tinted vehicles because of their frequent connection to kidnapping, robbery and one chance crimes.

Disu made the remarks while responding to concerns raised by Nigerian Bar Association President Afam Osigwe, who opposed turning tinted glass permits into a revenue generating exercise but supported police regulation of their use.

Explaining his position, the IGP said police investigations had repeatedly uncovered tinted vehicles among assets recovered from criminal groups. He noted that the majority of vehicles seized from one chance syndicates during operations in Abuja were fitted with tinted windows.

According to him, excessively dark windows make it difficult for security personnel to identify occupants and assess potential threats during stop and search operations.

He criticised the growing practice of tinting windscreens and rear windows, insisting that such levels of concealment are unacceptable and undermine public safety.

Disu reiterated that Nigerian law only permits tinted glass for approved security or medical reasons and warned that permit holders must still comply with legal visibility requirements.

The police chief disclosed that law enforcement agencies would strengthen enforcement measures against illegally tinted vehicles while continuing efforts to tackle criminal activities nationwide.
