Nigeria’s top police officer, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has taken a tough stance against misconduct, warning that officers who break the law will face serious consequences without exception.

Speaking during a training graduation ceremony in Uyo, the IGP said the era where officers escaped punishment for wrongdoing has come to an end.

His comments come in the wake of the Effurun shooting in Delta State, an incident that has intensified calls for reform and stricter discipline within the police force.

Disu made it clear that any officer found guilty of misusing a weapon or engaging in unlawful killings will be removed from service and prosecuted in court.

He stressed that the use of firearms must remain controlled and justified, adding that poorly trained or reckless officers pose a serious danger to society.

The police boss also warned against corruption and indiscipline, highlighting issues such as extortion and reporting for duty under the influence of alcohol as unacceptable conduct.

He insisted that the police uniform should represent service and responsibility, not power without limits, emphasizing that justice will apply to every officer equally.

Addressing the newly trained personnel, he encouraged them to act with restraint, professionalism, and respect for human life in their daily duties.

In a related development, Akwa Ibom State police commissioner, Baba Mohammed Azare, revealed that a special unit has been created to respond swiftly to violent crimes.

He noted that selected officers from the retraining programme will form part of the unit, which is expected to strengthen security operations in the state.
