Defence Minister Christopher Musa has revealed that the ongoing international conflicts are limiting Nigeria’s access to military equipment needed to combat insecurity, forcing the country to focus more on local defence production.
Addressing participants at the Nigerian People’s Strategic Conference and Defence Exhibition in Abuja, Musa explained that the wars involving Israel, Iran, Russia, Ukraine and the United States have placed enormous pressure on the global defence market.
He noted that countries directly engaged in the conflicts often place large orders and make early payments, leaving fewer opportunities for other nations seeking similar military equipment.
To reduce dependence on foreign suppliers, the minister urged greater investment in local defence production, commending Nigerian manufacturers and innovators contributing to the sector.
Musa also identified the lack of a functional national database as a major obstacle to effective policing and crime prevention, saying security agencies struggle to trace suspects and monitor criminal activities without adequate records.
He called on lawmakers to support the establishment of a comprehensive database system, describing it as a critical tool for strengthening national security and governance.
The minister further urged Nigerians to provide useful intelligence to security agencies, stressing that public cooperation remains essential in the fight against crime and insecurity.
He maintained that tackling social challenges such as poverty, unemployment and illiteracy would help address some of the root causes of insecurity while promoting long term national stability.
