The African Democratic Congress Presidential Campaign Council (ADC-PCC) has accused Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso of advancing President Bola Tinubu’s political interests by calling on Atiku Abubakar to step aside for Peter Obi in the 2027 presidential race.
The allegation was made by the council’s Director of Media and Publicity, Kola Ologbondiyan, in a statement responding to Kwankwaso’s interview on Channels Television on Friday.
Ologbondiyan described the former Kano governor’s intervention as self-serving and potentially damaging to efforts to unite opposition parties against the ruling APC.
He questioned why Kwankwaso was urging opposition leaders to make way for one another instead of focusing on challenging Tinubu over the economic hardship, hunger, poverty and insecurity the ADC-PCC says Nigerians are facing.
“Rather than campaigning against President Tinubu, whose administration Nigerians are eagerly working to vote out, Kwankwaso is fixated on Atiku Abubakar,” Ologbondiyan said.
The spokesman further alleged that Kwankwaso was looking beyond the 2027 election and positioning himself for the 2031 presidential contest. He also referenced the former governor’s reported description of the vice-presidential office as a “spare tyre” while questioning his political calculations.
The ADC-PCC rejected the notion that Kwankwaso’s backing was indispensable to winning Kano State. Ologbondiyan cited the 2003 and 2007 presidential elections, arguing that Buhari had won the state without Kwankwaso’s support and that Atiku could also compete for votes there in 2027.
He also questioned Kwankwaso’s national electoral influence, pointing to his fourth-place finish in the 2023 presidential election. According to Ologbondiyan, Atiku’s relationships across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones give him a broad national political network.
The council accused Kwankwaso of pursuing personal interests rather than building opposition unity, warning that his intervention could weaken efforts to challenge Tinubu. It urged him and his allies to reconsider their position and support Atiku.
“Atiku remains our preferred pathway to defeating President Tinubu and ending the hunger, poverty, and insecurity that the APC administration has foisted on our nation,” Ologbondiyan said.
