Former PDP National Chairman Ahmed Makarfi says Nigeria’s worsening security situation requires emergency measures, urging President Bola Tinubu to make security the government’s foremost priority.
Former Kaduna State Governor Ahmed Makarfi has called for a national emergency on insecurity, saying the escalating security crisis across the country can no longer be treated as a routine governance issue.
Makarfi made the call during an interaction with journalists in Kaduna, where he stressed that protecting lives and communities should become the Federal Government’s most urgent responsibility.
According to him, security challenges have continued to expand despite Nigeria’s democratic progress, making it necessary for government at all levels to adopt a more aggressive and coordinated response.
The former governor maintained that meaningful economic growth and development would remain difficult unless authorities first restore peace and stability across affected communities.
He urged the Federal Government, state governments and local authorities to strengthen cooperation while investing more in security personnel, intelligence gathering, training and operational support.
Makarfi also warned against politicising insecurity, saying Nigerians face the consequences collectively regardless of party affiliations.
Beyond security, the former PDP chairman rejected calls for the deregistration of political parties ahead of the 2027 elections and expressed optimism that the PDP would emerge stronger from its internal disputes through dialogue and reconciliation.
