Former Petroleum Minister Diezani Alison Madueke says justice has finally prevailed after a UK court found her not guilty of bribery allegations that triggered nearly 11 years of investigations and legal proceedings.
The Southwark Crown Court cleared Alison Madueke of six bribery related charges on Wednesday, bringing to a close one of the most closely watched legal cases involving a former Nigerian public official.
British prosecutors had alleged that she accepted luxury items and benefits from industry figures in return for influence over lucrative oil and gas contracts during her time in office.
Following the judgment, Alison Madueke thanked God and those who stood by her throughout the lengthy legal process, saying the experience had been emotionally draining for her family and supporters.
She said she remained confident that the truth would eventually emerge, insisting that the verdict reflects the outcome she had long anticipated.
According to her, the court’s decision ends years of public criticism, accusations and intense scrutiny that followed her arrest in London shortly after leaving office.
A statement issued by her representative described the judgment as a complete clearing of her name and a major personal relief after years of uncertainty.
The former minister said she plans to address the public more fully in the future but will first take time to enjoy the freedom and peace she believes had been denied to her for many years.
