The Federal Government has declared Thursday, October 1, 2026, a public holiday as Nigeria marks its 66th Independence Anniversary, urging citizens to celebrate the occasion in peace and unity.

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the announcement on Wednesday in a statement signed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani.

Tunji-Ojo congratulated Nigerians at home and abroad and encouraged them to demonstrate patriotism, mutual respect and peaceful coexistence during the celebration.

According to the minister, peace and stability are essential for national development, urging citizens to uphold the values and love for country demonstrated by Nigeria’s founding fathers.

He described Nigeria’s diversity as a strength and said the collective commitment of citizens remains key to building a stronger and more prosperous nation.

The minister assured Nigerians that the Federal Government remained focused on improving national security and public safety while creating a conducive environment for citizens to live and pursue their legitimate aspirations.

He further said the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda would continue to work towards a better Nigeria.

Tunji-Ojo called on Nigerians to use the anniversary to renew their commitment to national unity and peaceful coexistence.
