Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu has challenged opposition parties to defend their records before voters ahead of the 2027 elections, saying the APC intends to seek another mandate by showcasing its projects rather than trading insults with political rivals.
The governor said his party would base its campaign on the performance of his administration and its development initiatives, maintaining that elections should provide an opportunity for political parties to explain their achievements and present alternative policies.
Aliyu spoke at Government House in Sokoto on Friday after observing the Jumu’at prayer, using the occasion to call for responsible political engagement and campaigns centred on issues affecting the electorate.
“We will ensure decorum in our campaign language and refrain from insulting anyone,” he declared, signalling his administration’s stated intention to avoid personal attacks as political activities increase ahead of the general elections.
According to the governor, several projects have been executed across Sokoto State under his administration, and these initiatives would form the basis of the APC’s appeal to voters when campaigns for another term intensify.
He added that his government would continue to pay attention to residents’ concerns and address their needs, insisting that governance should prioritise better living conditions and sustainable development.
Aliyu also turned the challenge towards opposition parties, urging them to tell voters what they accomplished when they previously held power instead of focusing their campaigns on attacks against the current government.
“Rather than resorting to campaigns of calumny, opposition parties should tell the people what they achieved when they were in power,” he said in remarks contained in a Government House statement.
The governor cautioned politicians and their supporters against using freedom of expression as an excuse to undermine the rights, dignity and personal security of others during political campaigns.
He further pledged to protect Sokoto residents regardless of their political affiliations, while calling on APC supporters to obey the law, respect differing opinions and pursue their political activities peacefully.
Aliyu said protecting the state from those he believes could threaten its stability was a collective responsibility, urging residents to preserve peace and mutual respect as the 2027 elections approach. He also expressed appreciation for the support and prayers he said his administration had continued to receive from the people.
