Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has compared petrol prices in Nigeria and the United Kingdom, saying a litre of fuel costs more than N3,000 in the UK and that Nigerians are “doing very well” with the prevailing price at home.
The governor made the comparison while speaking at the “Operation Rescue Benin-Asaba Road” event in Edo State, where he also defended the Federal Government’s economic reforms.
Okpebholo said he visited London the previous week and went to a filling station with a friend to compare the cost of petrol with prices in Nigeria. He said the price in the UK, after conversion to naira, amounted to more than N3,000 per litre.
According to the governor, the comparison showed that Nigerians were currently paying less for petrol than motorists in Britain.“We are doing very well here,” Okpebholo said, while praising President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to stabilise the Nigerian economy.
The governor’s statement comes amid continued public concerns over petrol prices and the wider cost of living following the removal of fuel subsidy and subsequent changes in pump prices.
He defended the economic reforms being implemented by the Tinubu administration, describing the process as difficult but expressing confidence that it would eventually produce results.
To explain his position, Okpebholo compared the reforms to an aircraft taking off, saying passengers have to wait until the plane reaches cruising altitude before certain services are provided.
He said Nigeria would soon reach what he described as a “cruising level,” where the benefits of the reforms would become more apparent.Okpebholo also highlighted road construction projects across Nigeria, including concrete-paved roads, as evidence of ongoing development under the Federal Government.
He spoke while backing the intervention on the Benin-Asaba Road, which has suffered deterioration and become a major source of difficulty for motorists travelling between Edo and Delta states.
The governor, however, did not limit his remarks to economic issues, as he also made a political declaration concerning the 2027 presidential election. He questioned whether Aso Rock was vacant and answered himself: “Is Aso Rock vacant? Is Aso Rock vacant? So Aso Rock is not vacant.”
Okpebholo further endorsed the view attributed to the Oba of Benin that a working President should not be changed, signalling his support for Tinubu’s continued presidency.
He also expressed confidence that Edo State and Nigeria were in safe hands, saying the ongoing reforms would eventually take the country to a more stable economic level.
