The Presidency and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde have disagreed over calls for a United Nations investigation into the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers, with the Federal Government insisting Nigeria’s security agencies have adequately handled the matter.
The Presidency, through Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, dismissed the proposal as unnecessary, insisting that the military and other security agencies had already explained how the victims were rescued after spending 56 days in captivity.
Onanuga argued that the operation came at a heavy cost, with some security personnel losing their lives, and questioned suggestions that government institutions had failed to properly handle the incident.
He also alleged that Makinde’s position was politically influenced, although he said the Federal Government would not object if the United Nations decided to examine the incident.
Governor Makinde had earlier called for an international investigation, saying Nigerians deserve a transparent account of the abduction, the rescue operation and any possible institutional failures.
According to the governor, the demand is intended to promote justice for the victims, strengthen accountability and restore public confidence rather than discredit Nigeria’s security agencies.
Makinde also confirmed that the Oyo State Government has assumed responsibility for the rehabilitation, healthcare and education of the rescued pupils and teachers.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Army said the rescue followed weeks of coordinated security operations involving multiple agencies, while some of the victims described the difficult conditions they endured during their captivity.
