Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin says the proposed creation of state police will improve community policing, enhance intelligence gathering and help restore lasting peace in Northern Nigeria if backed by adequate legal safeguards.
During a live radio programme in Kaduna, Barau said the initiative followed wide consultations and includes safeguards to prevent abuse by political actors.
He explained that state police officers recruited from local communities would better understand their environment and respond more effectively to security threats.
According to him, the Nigeria Police Force would retain responsibility for national security issues, while state police would focus on maintaining law and order within their jurisdictions.
Barau also said constitutional provisions would empower the Federal Government to intervene whenever state police are used improperly, expressing optimism that the reform would receive broad legislative support.
