The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has called for national unity and peaceful coexistence, urging Nigerians to overcome their political, religious and ethnic differences during a meeting with Atiku Abubakar.

He made the appeal on Wednesday while receiving former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, and members of his delegation at his palace in Sokoto.

The Sultan stressed that national development could only be achieved through collective efforts, urging Nigerians to work together regardless of their political, religious and ethnic affiliations.

He also highlighted the responsibilities of traditional institutions in maintaining peaceful coexistence, promoting national unity and supporting sustainable development.

According to him, citizens must take collective responsibility for building a better society and addressing the challenges facing the country.

“Peace, unity and mutual understanding are essential for addressing the challenges facing our nation. We must all embrace collective responsibility towards building a better society,” the Sultan said.

Atiku, in his response, thanked the traditional ruler for the hospitality extended to him and his delegation, while acknowledging the important contributions of traditional institutions to national development.

The former vice-president noted that traditional rulers, particularly the Sultan, had continued to play important roles in promoting peace and strengthening unity across the country.

He reaffirmed the need for Nigerians to cooperate in building a prosperous nation, regardless of their differences.

The visit also provided an opportunity for discussions on national issues and the continued promotion of peace, unity and development.

The Sultan was accompanied by senior members of the Sultanate Council, including the Wazirin Sokoto, Magajin Rafin Sokoto, Galadiman Garin Sokoto, Sa’in Kilgori and the council’s secretary.
