Works Minister Dave Umahi says President Bola Tinubu refused demands for his dismissal following the death of Mary Habila, saying the President instead urged him to remain focused on delivering road infrastructure across Nigeria.
Speaking during a public event, Umahi said some critics attempted to use the incident to score political points by demanding his removal. He said President Tinubu instead encouraged him to continue his work, telling him to “go and build more roads.”
Umahi said the deaths of Habila and one of his relatives led him to cancel his birthday celebration as a mark of mourning.
He denied any involvement in Habila’s death and maintained that those politicising the incident should allow investigations to run their course.
The minister’s comments come as the Nigeria Police Force continues its investigation into Habila’s death following the transfer of the case to Abuja for a forensic examination.
