President Bola Tinubu remains committed to local government autonomy and stronger grassroots administration, Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma has assured Nigerians.

Uzodimma, who chairs the Progressive Governors’ Forum, gave the assurance in Abuja at the 2026 General Assembly of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON).

According to a statement released by ALGON on Sunday, the governor pledged the President’s support for local government autonomy, institutional capacity and financial viability.

He said effective local administration was essential to ensuring that government policies translated into tangible benefits for citizens, adding that the Renewed Hope Agenda was designed to reach the third tier of government.

The assurance comes as questions persist over the implementation of local government financial autonomy. In July 2024, the Supreme Court ordered that allocations from the Federation Account be paid directly to democratically elected local government councils instead of being controlled by state governments.

However, challenges surrounding direct funding, council elections and the management of public resources remain central to discussions about the effectiveness of local government administration.

At the assembly, ALGON National President Bello Lawal called on local government officials to improve their institutional capacity and administrative efficiency. He said the association was committed to repositioning councils within Nigeria’s governance structure.

The meeting also reviewed the association’s activities and budgets, approved reports from its principal officers and adopted proposed constitutional amendments. Members further approved the reconstitution of the Board of Trustees to fill vacancies and changed the designation of the association’s administrative head from Secretary-General to Director-General.

ALGON said it would align its reforms and activities with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, with the stated goal of improving service delivery across the country’s 774 local government areas and area councils.
